Part of Software updates explained: what to check before and after
How to update devices safely: phones, PCs, and smart home
Update devices safely with named paths for Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, routers, and smart-home gear, plus a practical preflight and verification routine.
What to take away
- Start inside the device, app, app store, or manufacturer's documented update control.
- Protect irreplaceable files before a major update and test that the backup can be reached.
- Keep portable devices powered, leave enough storage, and allow installation time without interruption.
- Update one important device at a time when several devices perform the same job.
- Verify the new version and core functions before calling the job complete.
To update devices safely, make it a controlled change. You know what is being updated, where the package comes from, what must remain available, and how you will respond if installation fails. What the different kinds of update actually change is set out in software updates explained.
1. Identify the update target
Write down the device model, current operating-system or firmware version, and the component asking to update. A browser update, a laptop firmware update, and a printer utility update have different consequences.
Trust the update alert?
Did the alert arrive by email, text, ad, or unexpected page?
Do not use its button; open settings or official app store independently
Check whether the same release appears in trusted settings
If the alert arrived by email, text, advertisement, or an unexpected browser page, do not use its button. Open the trusted settings screen or official app store independently. A pop-up offering a driver or cleaner may itself be the attack, as the consumer device security guide warns. Check whether the same release appears there.
2. Protect what cannot be replaced
Back up documents, photos, messages, project files, authentication recovery information, and any local application data that matters. Sync status alone is not proof that every file has a second copy. What that assumption cost one household is the subject of a family file-recovery case. Open the backup destination and inspect recent items.
Backup before updating
- Documents, photos, and messages
- Project files and local app data
- Authentication recovery information
- Open backup destination and inspect recent items
- Router or hubexport configuration
- Record network names, settings, connected devices, account access
For a router or smart-home hub, export the configuration if the maker supports it. Record network names, special settings, connected devices, and account access. That inventory is exactly what the smart home maintenance checklist keeps current. For a work or school device, follow the administrator's process instead of changing system software yourself.
3. Read the release and support notes
Check whether the update applies to the exact model and current version. Note required free space, power conditions, expected restarts, known compatibility limits, and whether rollback is supported. If the device controls medical, safety, access, or business-critical functions, get the responsible provider's instructions first. One workplace setup where access tools had to survive every release is an accessible workstation case.
Read release notes first
- Confirm update applies to exact model and version
- Note required free space and power conditions
- Check expected restarts and compatibility limits
- Confirm whether rollback is supported
- For critical devices, get provider instructions first
- Enable automatic updates and verify they work
The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises enabling automatic updates where possible, checking that they still work, backing up regularly, and supplying storage, power, Wi-Fi, or a restart when the device requests them. Its device update guidance also stresses that products eventually become unsupported. These are separate checks: automatic mode reduces delay, while support status determines whether updates still exist.
4. Prepare the installation
Before starting, confirm:
- The update matches the exact device model and comes from its built-in updater or the maker's official source.
- Important files and, where applicable, device settings have a reachable backup; keep account or recovery details available.
- Required storage is free, and the device has reliable power and any required network connection.
- Work is saved, the installation has time to finish, and model-specific recovery instructions are accessible.
Preflight before installing
- Save open work
- Connect laptop or phone to reliable power
- Use stable trusted network for large packages
- Free publisher-named storage plus working room
- Disconnect nonessential docks, drives, accessories
- Keep passwords, passcodes, recovery keys available
- Allow time for downloads, installs, restarts, checks
Do not start a firmware update when power is unstable. Do not close a laptop lid, unplug a router, or force-restart a device unless the official recovery instructions tell you to do so.
5. Use the correct update path
Use the correct update path
| Product | Usual trusted path |
|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | system settings and official app store |
| Windows or Mac computer | operating-system settings and signed app updater |
| Router | local administration page or official management app |
| Smart device | maker's official app, hub, or documented automatic process |
| Browser | built-in about or update screen, or official package manager |
| Accessory | official companion app or documented firmware utility |
Use the named operating-system controls: on Windows, open Settings > Windows Update; on a Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > General > Software Update; on Android, open Settings > System > System update. Android menu names can vary by manufacturer.
Install apps from Google Play Store on Android or Apple App Store on iPhone and iPad. Check the store's updates area rather than following a pop-up.
Smart-home products may expose updates in Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, or Apple Home. Open the app associated with the exact product and follow its device-specific firmware instructions; some devices update automatically or require the maker's documented process.
Router update controls differ by model. Find its local admin address on the label or in the manual, or check the network details on a connected device; common addresses include 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1. Sign in to the router's administration page and look for Firmware Update or Software Update, following the maker's model-specific instructions. Some routers use an official management app instead.
Manufacturer utilities can provide model-matched updates: examples include Dell SupportAssist, Lenovo Vantage, HP Support Assistant, and Logitech G HUB for supported hardware. Menus and coverage vary by model, so check the maker's current support page for exact instructions. Do not substitute a third-party driver site or download directory.
Where a product offers it, CISA's update software guidance says to turn on automatic updates in the device or application settings. Install notified updates, especially critical ones, as soon as possible. Many exist to close security holes.
6. Let the process finish
The displayed percentage may pause while files are verified, unpacked, or written. Heat and fan noise can rise during installation. Watch for explicit errors, but do not assume that a slow stage is frozen.
If the publisher provides an expected time or recovery threshold, follow it. Otherwise, consult official support from another device before interrupting a firmware or operating-system update.
7. Verify the result
After restart, check:
Verify the result
- The version number and update history.
- Internet and local network access.
- Audio, camera, display, and input devices.
- Printing, storage, and required accessories.
- Important applications and saved files.
- Backup and security status.
If several household devices do the same job, update one and observe it before updating the rest. That keeps one known-working option available and makes a shared fault easier to identify.
Common questions
Can I keep working during an update?
Sometimes during download, but save work and expect installation to interrupt the device or require a restart.
Should I update every app at once?
Routine app batches are usually reasonable. Update a critical app separately when you need to test its workflow immediately.
What if the device has very little storage?
Use the maker's supported cleanup or external-storage method. Do not delete unknown system files.
Is a backup required for every small update?
Maintain regular backups continuously. Confirm a recent backup before a major system or firmware change.
