Map the system before buying
Write one sentence for each desired outcome: keep an entry light on after sunset, lower heat while nobody is home, alert a resident when water appears under a sink, or provide a visible doorbell signal.

Local control keeps selected functions available in the home when the internet is down. Cloud control supports remote access, off-site processing, and provider integrations. One household keeps cameras reachable but isolated, worked through in a home network upgrade case. Neither model guarantees privacy, security, or continuity alone.
Ask which actions happen inside the home, which require a provider account, and which stop if the subscription ends. Test manual operation without the app. Safety-related devices should follow the manufacturer's installation and maintenance requirements even when connected features are added.

Bridges exist because device radios differ. Zigbee, a low-power mesh standard built on IEEE 802.15.4 and common in wireless light switches and sensors, requires a coordinator on every network. Hub products bundle that role with translation to the rest of the home.
Build automations with limits
An automation has a trigger, conditions, actions, and an exception path. "At sunset, if someone is home, turn on the porch light" is easier to inspect than a chain of unnamed routines.

Name each automation by outcome. Avoid two routines controlling the same device in opposite ways. Add time limits and safety boundaries where appropriate. Test what happens after a power loss, manual override, daylight-saving change, empty battery, or missing sensor report.
The NIST study of consumer smart-home security and privacy practices found that users voiced concerns but often had limited technical options or knowledge for reducing risk. The researchers recommended clearer security guidance and better controls over collected data.
Set household permissions
Use named accounts where possible instead of sharing one password. Give administrators, residents, guests, children, contractors, and property managers only the access they need. Review who can see cameras, open door locks, change automations, purchase items, listen to history, or invite new members. A member or permission nobody added is one of the device and account security warning signs.
Agree on microphone, camera, occupancy, and location use before activation. Visitors and workers may not expect recording. Place controls where residents can mute, cover, or disable sensing without hunting through an app.
Prepare for ordinary failure
Keep physical keys, wall switches, manual valves, thermostat controls, and another communication method usable. Label hubs and bridges. Record device model, room, account owner, purchase date, support end date, battery type, reset method, and installation code.
Back up configuration when the platform supports it, but do not assume a backup can restore a discontinued service. Keep recovery codes away from the controller and primary phone. Maintain the system
Review the device list every few months. Install supported updates, remove unused access, test alerts, replace weak batteries, and confirm that automations still match household routines. Before selling, gifting, recycling, or leaving a home, remove the device from accounts and automations, erase stored data through the current manufacturer process, and verify that the new owner cannot reach the prior household.

Does every smart device need a hub?
No. Some connect directly to Wi-Fi or another controller, while others require a bridge, hub, or border router.
Will a smart home work without internet access?
