How to set up a new laptop without carrying over old problems

New-computer setup is an acceptance test as much as a transfer. A polished desktop does not prove the storage is healthy, the correct charger arrived, or irreplaceable files moved.

Step 1: inspect before signing in
Photograph the shipping box, seals, serial label, charger, and device condition. Check for dents, uneven seams, screen cracks, loose hinges, damaged pins, swelling, or signs of liquid. Compare the model, processor, memory, storage, keyboard layout, screen, and included accessories with the order. If there is unsafe damage or the wrong model, stop. Adding accounts and files makes a return harder.
Step 2: prepare recovery material
Have the old computer, current backup, account passwords, multi-factor device, Wi-Fi credentials, software licenses, and organization contacts available. Do not retire the old computer yet.
Decide who owns the primary account. A family member should not build another adult's computer under the helper's personal cloud account. For work or school equipment, let the organization control enrollment and security policy.
Step 3: connect with care
Use a network you trust, because first-run setup signs in to accounts and downloads large updates and drivers. The FTC's explainer on public Wi-Fi networks notes that most websites now encrypt traffic, shown by the lock or https in the address bar, and still advises strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and current software wherever you connect. A home connection also avoids burning through a metered hotspot allowance on setup downloads.
Do not install an unknown driver from a search advertisement. Use the computer or component maker's support channel, and match the exact model and operating system.
Step 4: create accounts deliberately
Use a strong sign-in password and configure biometrics only after the password works. Set recovery email, phone, keys, or codes, then store them away from the laptop. The NCSC's Cyber Aware actions make a reasonable first-hour checklist: a strong separate password for the main email account, two-step verification, a password manager, updates switched on, and a backup arranged.
If the platform supports separate account roles, use an administrator account for system changes and a standard account for routine work. This may not fit a managed computer, so follow organizational policy.

Step 5: update in layers
Connect power and install stable operating system, security, firmware, and app updates through supported tools. Restart until no required updates remain. Do not flash firmware during unstable power or through an unverified package.
After updates, record the software version and device-manager or system-report status. An unknown device, repeated update failure, or firmware warning deserves investigation before migration.
Step 6: remove only identified extras
Review preinstalled trials and utilities. Keep hardware control software needed for keys, power, audio, graphics, docks, or updates. Remove promotional software only after identifying its role and preserving license information.
Do not run aggressive registry cleaners, driver packs, or optimization tools. They can remove evidence and create faults before the baseline is known.
Step 7: transfer by category
Create a table before copying:

Scan transferred files with current security tools. Do not copy entire system folders from the old machine unless the migration tool explicitly calls for them.
Step 8: set backup and updates
Choose a backup method that covers local files and can retain prior versions. Confirm frequency, destination capacity, encryption, and restore credentials. Run the first backup, then restore a harmless test file to a different location. Enable supported automatic security updates. Set active hours or restart preferences so updates do not interrupt predictable work, but do not postpone them indefinitely.
Step 9: review privacy and communications
Check camera, microphone, location, contacts, files, screen recording, accessibility, and startup permissions. Test the camera indicator and physical shutter if present. Disable lock-screen or login-screen content that exposes private notifications.
Review browser synchronization before importing everything. Old extensions can carry excessive permissions or abandoned code.
Step 10: test the complete machine
Within the seller's return period, test:
- every port with a known-good compatible device;
- charger and battery under normal work;
- keyboard, trackpad, touch, pen, webcam, microphone, speakers, and headphone jack;
- sleep, wake, lid close, shutdown, and restart;
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in normal locations;
- an external display at the needed resolution and refresh rate;
- storage capacity and memory amount; and
- the heaviest real application you expect to use.
Record defects with dates and conditions. A clean setup creates a baseline that makes later troubleshooting far easier. Keeping that baseline current is the job of the laptop upkeep, backup, and security checklist.
Common questions
Should I restore the entire old computer?
Only when the supported migration tool and your needs justify it. A selective transfer avoids obsolete apps, clutter, and settings you no longer understand.
Must I charge the battery for many hours first?
Follow the manufacturer. Modern laptops generally manage charging electronically, but firmware updates and setup still need stable power.
Should I install every optional driver update?
No. Install supported updates that apply to the exact hardware and solve a need. Optional drivers can change working systems and deserve review.
When can I erase the old laptop?
After the new machine passes data, account, software, accessory, backup, and recovery tests over enough time to expose missing items.
